Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government

On 24th June 2009, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd annouced the  Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG), a consortium lead by UTS, which has had a Centre for Local Government since 1991, partnered with the University of Canberra, the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG), Local Government Managers Australia and the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia. ACELG will enhance professionalism and skills, showcase innovation and best practice, and facilitate a better informed policy debate.

Supported with $8 million funding from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Centre was officially launched on 14 December by Hon Anthony Albanese as an an institution that focuses on improving leadership, efficiency and performance in local government.  ACELG marks the beginning of a new era of co-operation between the three levels of government in Australia.

Building on existing local government programs and networks, the Centre expected to be fully operational by early 2010. The Institute will coordinate UC's involvement as lead partners in two Centre research programs and as a key participant in a third.

Activities will be grouped in six program areas:

  •    Research and policy foresight
  •    Innovation and best practice
  •    Governance and strategic leadership
  •    Organisation capacity building
  •    Rural, remote and Indigenous Australia
  •    Workforce development.
