Comparative Public Management & Governance
Current Research
The internationalisation of public management has resulted from the sustained focus of governments globally on public sector reform as they have continued to confront new internal and environmental challenges during the last three decades. This research area focuses on several dimensions of public management and governance, such as organisation, people and performance; and specific fields such as whole of government and new forms of public governance. There are strong comparative and international strands to this work, and a number of substantial joint projects with collaborators from Australian and overseas universities, several of which involve major grants and books.
Topics currently under study include:
- Comparative Public Sector Organisation - COBRA
- Corporate Governance in the Public Sector
- Comparative Public Sector Reform
- New Forms of Public Sector Governance
- Performance Management
- Public Service and People Management
- Whole of Government in Public Sector
Whole of Government ARC Linkage Project
Australian experiments with whole of government approaches to policy development, implementation and service delivery increased during the 2000s. The project involves five investigators from three universities and five public service partners. The research surveys practice, undertake case studies, develops a framework for assessing horizontal approaches and coordination, and generates better practice guidelines.
Corporate Governance ARC Linkage Project
A book on Public Governance in the Public Sector is currently being finalised.
Comparative Public Organisation
An online survey has been conducted, which involves 216 Australian public agencies. The results will contribute to an international network (COBRA) of scholars from eleven countries, and produce comparative analysis of public organisations.
